Skype is a
software application that allows users to make
voice calls over the Internet. Calls to other
users of the service and, in some countries, to
free-of-charge numbers, are free, while calls to
other landlines and mobile phones can be made
for a fee. Additional features include instant
messaging, file transfer and video conferencing.

We strongly discourage the use of Skype on
the UCF network for various reason. Here are
some reasons due to security:
- Skype hosts can become supernodes, which
carry control traffic for other callers.
- Skype can be chatty, even when idle,
affecting bandwidth and system performance,
can also lead to possible avenue for attack.
- Skype inherently trusts other Skype
systems/users thus introducing a conduit for
propagation of viruses and worms.
- Managing Skype security is in the hands
of the user, rather than the IT Manager.
Thus, keeping up with security and
vulnerabilities can be a challenge.
