Skype
Skype is a software application that allows users to make voice calls over the Internet. Calls to other users of the service and, in some countries, to free-of-charge numbers, are free, while calls to other landlines and mobile phones can be made for a fee. Additional features include instant messaging, file transfer and video conferencing. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skype

We strongly discourage the use of Skype on the UCF network for various reason. Here are some reasons due to security:

  • Skype hosts can become supernodes, which carry control traffic for other callers.
  • Skype can be chatty, even when idle, affecting bandwidth and system performance, can also lead to possible avenue for attack.
  • Skype inherently trusts other Skype systems/users thus introducing a conduit for propagation of viruses and worms.
  • Managing Skype security is in the hands of the user, rather than the IT Manager. Thus, keeping up with security and vulnerabilities can be a challenge.
