Rules of the Road
I
- Foundation of Information Technology Policy
The computer systems, interconnected network devices and
the variety of applications supplied and supported by it
comprise what we refer to as being Information Technology
(IT). This covers the applications offered in the labs,
the general networking that connects each office on
campus, the dialup connection servers, e-mail,
web-hosting, etc.
As the University of
Central Florida embraces technology and applies it
appropriately to all necessary and practical resources, it
must be understood that IT is generally a large part of
how the University itself operates.
E-mail accounts are
available to all students, faculty and staff-- as well as
a cost-free dialup connection should the user desire to
use the University as its Internet Service Provider (ISP).
Policies and information can be found on the web, students
may register and browse the class schedule, programs of
academic nature are provided for use free of charge - the
list of services rendered to all those at UCF by the
network are numerous and growing each year.
As Information
Technology, therefore, is provided to the user and
maintained by Computer Services, the users must also apply
a reasonable amount of responsibility to that which they
have been given. Usage of Information Technology is
expected to be valued and respected by each individual
partaking therein, and a certain amount of respect for the
policies and courtesies of the Internet in general must be
obeyed.
Information technology is
not only governed by the University itself, but also by
state and federal law; therefore; the policies of all of
these organizations must be strictly adhered to should a
user wish to continue using the network. This document has
been developed to help the users of Information Technology
as provided by the University of Central Florida to better
understand the policies of the University and to apply
them responsibly.
